The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) is an international standard for describing language ability. It uses a six-level scale: A1 and A2 (basic), B1 and B2 (independent), and C1 and C2 (proficient). It is used by language courses, employers, and universities worldwide.
This is a quick vocabulary-based self-assessment, not a certified examination. It gives you a reliable ballpark estimate based on which Portuguese vocabulary items you recognise across frequency levels. For certified results, consider an official exam such as CELPE-Bras (Brazilian Portuguese) or DIPLE (European Portuguese).
Brazilian Portuguese (BP) and European Portuguese (EP) share the same grammar and most vocabulary but differ significantly in pronunciation, some everyday words, and informal expressions. This test focuses on vocabulary common to both varieties, with a slight lean toward Brazilian Portuguese, which is the more widely spoken.
The fastest improvement comes from combining spaced repetition (reviewing words at the right time) with memorable encoding techniques. Apps like Loci use memory palace mnemonics so words stay in your head after a single review — rather than requiring dozens of repetitions like traditional flashcards.
